Moving and Packing Tips: How to Prepare for the Movers

When you are planning on moving, it can get stressful and overwhelming. There is a lot to think about, from changing your address and informing your utility company, to transferring home insurance policies and finding people to help you move. Hiring professional movers is a great way to relieve some of the moving stress, as it helps you focus on the packing and other aspects of moving. Here are some tips to help prepare for the arrival of the movers so the entire experience goes much more smoothly.

Focus on your packing

Unless you are hiring the moving company to also pack boxes for you, you need to do this on your own. Make sure you don't wait until the last minute to start packing, since it might take longer than you think. It also helps to start early since you might end up needing more boxes or extra tape. Use medium and large-sized boxes, but make sure you don't overfill them.

Just because there is more room in a box, that doesn't mean you should stuff more things into it! Make sure big and heavy stuff is at the bottom of the box, with smaller items on top. Label all boxes with the exact room they go in, not who they belong to. This helps the movers know where they go without asking who each person is.

Disassemble Furniture

Try to disassemble as many furniture items as you can beforehand. There are full-service movers who will do the disassembling and reassembling for you, but if you did not pay for this service, it is your responsibility. Even if a large table might fit through the door at your current home, there is no telling if it will fit in your new home, unless you have taken measurements. Just in case, take apart any furniture that is easy to take apart and put back together. With sofas, at least remove the sofa legs if they screw off, which is common.

Get prepared before the movers arrive

On the day of the move, get up several hours before the movers are set to arrive. Start moving packed boxes near the entrance of the home so the movers can access them easily. Make sure linens are in bags or boxes and that mattresses are stripped. Remove mattresses from the beds and stand them up next to the bed for easy transport. Take one more trip through the house to be sure everything is packed and that all boxes are labelled. Also check areas you might have forgotten to pack, such as the attic or basement, in cabinets or drawers, and under sinks.
